Technology

Well, I'll have to admit, Alexander Graham Bell was a genius. I mean, he ranks up there higher than most scientists. Much higher than whoever found out the earth was round, higher than the guy who discovered gravity...yes, my friends, Bell invented the phone. I'd hate to see where we'd be today without the phone. Yes, sir, the phone's been a help.

But alas, all good things must move aside for "better" things. And this time, I'm not talking about the internet. I'll get to that later. No, I'm talking about text messaging. Now, I never use it...probably because I don't have a cell phone. But whoever invented it wasn't really too bright. Think about this for a second. What is the purpose of a cell phone? To call people? Good! 2 points to the kid in purple stripes. So if a cell phone is meant to call people, why in the world do you need to type to them on the same phone? I mean, if I see someone walking, punching letters to someone on the phone, I just feel like yelling "just call the guy already!" Isn't that what it's for? Ah, techlogogy...never makes sense. And when it does, it's still useless.

Now what about the internet, you ask? Well actually, they now have phones on the internet. Oh goody. I suppose it's useful, as long as your phone isn't like, right beside you. And, written things are easier to remember and such. Kind of writing a letter. But a lot faster. And without the ink stains. So the internet, talking about instant messaging and email, is a lot more sensible in my opinion. And yea...that's all.

But last night I was thinking. Were people thinking how pointless new gadgets were when the phone just came out? Here's an example conversation:

"Why, that Alex guy made something called a phonetelle! Whoever would use such a thing? All the kids are calling on eachother using these funny devices. What ever happened to walking across town and talking to their face? Why, the next generation won't even know how to ring a doorbell. Why, they won't even know what a doorbell is! They'll all be calling eachother all day, and won't even know what their friends look like! What's next, letters that can teleport?"

And how about in the future?

"Why, back in the day, back when the snow was twice as heavy as it is now, we had to talk to people on things they called phones! We didn't have to teleport ourselves over to our friends' house just to say hi, no, we actually talked to them from 1000 miles away! Now that's what I call old-fashioned. And when we sent letters over the internet, we actually had to write them and read them ourselves! Why, the next generation won't even know how to read anymore, it will be the robot's job to do that!"

Oh boy, I can't wait until I grow old so I can have that kind of conversation with my grandkids. But really, my point is, who cares about tradition? Why do we have to walk next door just to say hi? If there's an easier more convenient way to do it, just call them! Or teleport next door. That would just be fun, if nothing else.

Oh yea, and...text messaging still is lame. 'Cause calling people on the phone you're holding, instead of punching buttons, is the easier way. Anyway, ceeya!

Comments:
hey. text messages are handy. dont dis them. i know, i know, i never thought id be saying this. but, i have a cell phone, and ill admit, i text my friends. not a LOT, but its just handy in some situations. i promise. its like an email... but it goes from me wherever i am, to them wherever they are, without having to disturb them (cuz its a heck of alot easier to ignore a text than a phone call).

so dont dis them.

but as for the rest of this... totally with you here.
